The Great Reversal
HUMAN AGENCY IN DESTRUCTION AND SALVATION
PROVIDENCE IN DESTRUCTION AND SALVATION
The will of man, the scheming and strategizing, the posturing and weeping, are not what truly moves the story of our lives forward.
Karen H. Jobes
Read from a monotheistic perspective, the story explains the reversal of fortune not as an ongoing tug-of-war between the gods, but as consistent with the powerful word of the one, true God. The author of Esther implies a consistency in God’s rule of human history that is based on his word, not on circumstances. Regardless of how circumstances appear, God is ruling history according to the ancient covenant he made with Israel at Sinai.
