Apostles' Creed | Jesus

Matthew 1:1

Sermon Notes

Preacher: Jeremiah Fyffe

1. CHRIST | Matthew 1:1

2. ONLY SON | Matthew 16:16

3. OUR LORD | Philippians 2:9–11

4. INCARNATE | 1 John 1:1–2

5. SUFFERED, REJECTED, CRUCIFIED, RESURRECTED | Mark 8:33

6. ASCENDED, SEATED AND RETURNING | Colossians 3:1–4

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead.

On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Matthew 1:1

The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David

Matthew 16:16

You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Philippians 2:9–11

Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

1 John 1:1–2

That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we looked upon and have touched with our hands, concerning the word of life—the life was made manifest, and we have seen it, and testify to it and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and was made manifest to us

Mark 8:33

And he began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders and the chief priests and the scribes and be killed, and after three days rise again

Colossians 3:1–4

If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.

Jesus Is Better

QUESTION 1:

Read the section on Jesus in The Apostles’ Creed below. On Sunday we covered Jesus as the Christ, as God the Son, our Lord, incarnate, working the gospel and reigning in heaven. Which of these core doctrines regarding Jesus do you have the least familiarity or do you find most difficult to understand?

QUESTION 2:

Jesus is both the Christ, the son of David and the Son of God. Why are both of these doctrines essential for understanding Jesus as Lord and for understanding the incarnation?

QUESTION 3:

The creed mentions the historical figure Pontius Pilate. How does this help us to understand the reality and historicity of Jesus and the work of his gospel?

QUESTION 4:

Where is Jesus today? How does Colossians 3:1-4 help us to apply the reality of Jesus today to our own lives?
