The Noble Bereans
Preacher: Jeremiah Fyffe
They received the word with eagerness
They examined the scriptures daily
See to it that no one takes you captive by philosophy and empty deceit, according to human tradition, according to the elemental spirits of the world, and not according to Christ.
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son …
1 Corinthians 15:17–19
And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ have perished. If in Christ we have hope in this life only, we are of all people most to be pitied.
At the tomb they found an angel who said: Do not be alarmed. You seek Jesus of Nazareth, who was crucified. He has risen; he is not here.

In his presentation of the gospel, Paul states that Jesus is the Christ. What does this mean? What are some passage of scripture that can help to explain who the Christ is? Consider some of the following passages. Have members of the group read to themselves and report what they find: Genesis 3:15; Deuteronomy 18:15; 1 Samuel 2:35-36; 2 Samuel 7:12–16; Isaiah 7:14; Zechariah 9:9–10.
Luke tells us that the Bereans “received the word with all eagerness.” How eager are you to receive the word? Is there anything that you can do to encourage eagerness in preparation for the various ways we have to receive the word as a church (i.e. morning Bible reading, CGs, triads, Celebration Service, etc.)?
The Bereans also “examined the Scriptures daily to see if these things were so.” What are some practices that you have found helpful to help integrate the word preached on Sunday with the rest of your study during the week? How can you encourage both eagerness and dailiness in your households (whether you’re the head of the household or not)?
